SUMMARY:Nitrogen Management Workshop – Prince County
DESCRIPTION:Join us at one of our Nitrogen Management Workshops in January! \nA nitrogen management workshop for farmers in each county will focus on improving nitrogen management with Steve Watts\, Bryce Geisel\, and a featured island farmer. Come join the discussion and learn about nitrogen management research trials\, nitrogen losses\, enhanced efficiency fertilizers\, and hear firsthand experiences from farmers working to improve their nitrogen management. \n\nMonday\, January 12th\, 11am – 2pm at the O’Leary Community Complex \nTuesday\, January 13th\, 11am – 2pm at Lane’s Riverhouse Inn\nThursday\, January 15th\, 11am – 2pm at the Emerald Community Centre\n\nThis event is free to attend\, with a light lunch provided. Please register in advance to help us confirm catering. \nMeet the Speakers \nSteve Watts\, Genesis Crop Systems Inc\, has been conducting demonstration trials with nitrogen on potatoes and other crops for more than a decade. Starting with Fertilizer Canada 4R trials and continuing with Dalhousie University N rate trials\, Living Labs trials V1 and V2 and Atlantic Grains Council trials\, Steve has worked with a number of farms across all growing areas of the Island. The farmers that Steve provides agronomy services to today are experiencing lower overall N rates and costs\, reduced GHG emissions and lower post-harvest residual soil NO3 levels than their non-adopting neighbours. Steve’s presentation will review results from the 10+ years of trials to provide participants with information that may encourage the adoption of new N management strategies on-farm. \nBryce Geisel’s presentation\, Keeping Nitrogen Where You Want It\, will focus on the major nitrogen loss pathways and how the 4Rs can be used to mitigate those losses. It will also cover what enhanced efficiency fertilizers are\, and how they should be used to help reduce nitrogen loss and increase nitrogen use efficiency of crops. Bryce is the Senior Agronomist for Koch Agronomic Services in Canada.  He holds an MSc and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture\, both with a focus on agronomy.  He is a Professional Agrologist\, Certified Crop Advisor\, and has the 4R Nutrient Management Stewardship designation. \nIsland farmers Vernon Campbell\, Myles Rose\, and Morgan Smallman will each be at a workshop in their respective county to share their experience working to improve nitrogen management. \nFunding Partners \nThis event is funded in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS) On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF). \nThis event is also offered in partnership with the Farmers for Climate Solutions Farm Resilience Mentorship Program (FaRM). For more information\, please visit www.farmlearninghub.ca. By registering for this event\, you are agreeing to the FaRM Terms of Use and Privacy Statement.
