The fertilizer industry has established the Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place® (4R) Nutrient Management system in cooperation with governments, researchers, customers, and the public. This global approach ensures that nutrients are applied using the right source at the right rate, time and place through the adoption of Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) by producers to achieve economic, social and environmental sustainability. By utilizing the 4R Nutrient Management system, it will help to increase crop production, improve profitability, and minimize nutrient losses by improving nutrient use efficiency. It recognizes that BMPs must be customized to fit each farm’s unique climatic, soil, cropping, and operational conditions. This is achieved, as needed, with professional input from Certified Crop Advisers (CCAs), Professional Agrologists (P.Ags), Qualified Nutrient Management Planners, and government extension specialists who work with farmers to assess their situations and develop crop nutrient management plans.

Residents in Prince Edward Island (PEI) receive 100 per cent of their drinking water from groundwater, which makes it unique in comparison to other regions across Canada. In 2008, The Commission on Nitrates in Groundwater raised concerns over nitrate levels in groundwater in PEI. One source of nitrates comes from the application of crop nutrients.  Therefore, an important component in protecting PEI’s drinking water sources is sustainable nutrient management planning.

In November 2012, the PEI Government, the PEI Federation of Agriculture, the PEI Potato Board, the Canadian Fertilizer Institute (CFI), and the Kensington North Watersheds Association all signed a three year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to support the adoption of sustainable 4R Nutrient Stewardship systems within PEI.  A committee composed of all parties will oversee the MOU’s action plans, which includes extending the 4Rs to PEI’s farmers for their adoption in the Farming 4R Island project.
