The PEIFA is currently recruiting farms to feature in the 2017 Faces of Farming calendar. We welcome all farm families of various commodities and farm history to submit their name for our consideration. The Faces of Farming calendar has become very popular over the years for its ability to share good news stories about local producers while also educating the public about farming in Prince Edward Island.
Should you be interested in having your farm featured, please submit a short description of your farm to charlottec@peifa.ca. If selected the PEIFA will have a photographer visit your farm this summer/early fall to take photos.

Hog Outlook: More Hogs Than Expected
USDA’s June acreage report says there were 94.1 million acres of corn planted this year. That is 7 per cent more than last year and the third most corn acres in the last 70 years (after 2012 and 2013). Proposed rules for egg industry call for phasing out small hen cages by 2031
The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies says proposed new rules for farms could speed up a ban on the use of small, cramped cages for egg-laying hens. Last February, the group Egg Farmers of Canada announced the use of these cages would be phased out by 2036. MORE

This meeting is a good chance to meet and update each other on any current issues with the 2016 potato crop. There will be a guest speaker at the meeting Dr. Solke DeBoer. He will give a short presentation and overview on Dickeya and some of the research he completed over the last few years. According to the University of Minnesota Extension ‘Spudbug’ Newsletter, the year 2016 is shaping up to be a Colorado Potato Beetle year in the Red River Valley. It seems that even if an at-plant insecticide was applied, Colorado Potato Beetles are plentiful in some potato fields. MORE

Competitive international position for Bangladeshi potatoes
Ahiyan Impex Ltd. is a Bangladeshi exporter and importer of agricultural products which ships potatoes to various international destinations, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Dubai or Bahrain, and with interest to expand in Russia, despite some initial phytosanitary issues. According to Jahir Uddin Ahamad, chairman of the firm, “Our harvest season lasts from November to March and our potatoes are then kept in cold storage, which allows us to supply them all year round.” MORE
