Blueberry growers increase reward money by $2,000
The reward money has increased for anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of a vandal who struck a blueberry farm here last summer. The P.E.I. Klassen: Feeder market stable but demand remains soft
Comments from the country this week suggested the market was slightly firmer than week-ago levels. However, market reports stated prices were relatively unchanged and actually softened late in the week. The old saying that even a priest lies about his car’s gas mileage applies to overly optimistic cattlemen trying to bolster market enthusiasm. Feedlot margins have eroded; yearlings bought this last spring are now moving out with a $150 per head loss. Alberta packers appear to have their nearby demand covered and lowered bids to $140 for mid- to late September delivery. Seasonal weak beef demand continues to pressure wholesale values, setting a negative tone throughout the market pipeline. MORE

The new federal-provincial agreement on sharing chicken production among the provincial marketing boards is not yet a done deal. Quebec has yet to sign on, although apparently everybody who has a say in the province has agreed to the deal. MORE
500 cows stolen from New Zealand farm in unusual case
How do you steal 500 cows? Probably not all at once. That’s according to New Zealand police, who said Tuesday that they were investigating reports of the unlikely crime at a South Island farm. Locals said they’d never before heard of cattle rustling on such a massive scale. And that’s in a nation that’s home to some 10 million cows, more than double the number of people. MORE

MANITOBA’S QUEST TO BUILD A BETTER SWEET POTATO
The Manitoba and federal governments announced a $210,000 investment in agricultural research Monday, focused – at least in part – on building a better yam. According to the province, demand for sweet potatoes in Canada has jumped 83 per cent in the past decade. However, comparatively few yams are grown in Manitoba, meaning most are imported. MORE
Genetic improvement provides opportunities for potatoes
The potato is an important crop for Latin America and especially for South America, where it originated. Genetically improving potatoes can be a way to produce varieties that are resistant to pests and climate change, said Arnulfo Gutierrez, an expert on potatoes and a Panamanian official. MORE
Poland: Potato variety knowledge increases consumption

AAFC Potato Variety Evaluation Field Tour
The 2016 potato variety evaluation field tour will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 1 pm at the Harrington Research Farm located at 1200 Brackley Point Road (7 km north of the Charlottetown Airport). This year new varieties, advanced selections and Accelerated Release (AR) lines from three trials will be on display.
Trial 1: Advanced selections of fresh market and processing lines from AAFC under conventional production.
Trial 2: The Canadian Horticultural Council Research Cluster PEI Potato Variety Trial including new varieties, AR lines, high starch varieties and 6 lines at 75 lbs N/acre.
Trail 3: Advanced selections from AAFC under organic production.
