ON FARM CLIMATE ACTION FUND
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Agricultural Climate Solutions On Farm Climate Action Fund is designed to encourage and provide assistance to the Prince Edward Island agriculture industry to implement beneficial management practices (BMPs) that mitigate agricultural contributions to climate change. The Program will provide solutions for mitigation by supporting both practices that reduce the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released during or from an agricultural activity or that promote carbon sequestration in soils. The Program provides financial assistance for the adoption of BMPs through project-based payments or per-acre payments in the following activity areas:
-
- Expanding adoption of cover cropping
- Improving nitrogen management practices
- Improving grazing management (adopting rotational grazing)
Funding for this program is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Agricultural Climate Solutions Program, through the Natural Climate Solutions Fund.
PROGRAM OUTCOME
Reduce GHG emissions and increase carbon sequestration.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE
- Mi’kmaq First Nations and other Indigenous Organizations
- Agricultural producers or groups of agricultural producers
- Community Pastures

Bursary: Agrologist Courses, conferences, and exams
Through the On-Farm Climate Action Fund, agrologists residing in Prince Edward Island are eligible to receive support for the purpose of attending a conference or course. The conference bursary supports travel (flight, rentals or buses), accommodation during the duration of the conference, and registration. The conference bursary does not include costs associated with food.
To be eligible to receive this funding, the conference or course must be in alignment with one or more of the three Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) that are part of the OFCAF program, namely Improved Nitrogen Management, Cover Cropping or Rotational Grazing.
There is a limited amount of funding, and applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Eligible applicants must be professional agrologists working in Prince Edward Island. Successful applicants will be required to carry out one knowledge transfer activity (KTT), sharing what they have learned with producers in conjunction with PEI Federation of Agriculture.
To apply for this bursary, please complete this form. You will be notified in 8 business days if your application has been approved, and funding will be set aside to support your professional development.
Additional information, including eligible expenses and claim details or if you have any questions, please reach out to rchappell@peifa.ca.

Program Requirement for Cover Cropping Recipients
For a good cover of the soil, it is necessary to go early with the seasons and start seeding cover crops by the end of August until the end of September or mid-October. To be eligible for the cover cropping funding, your cover crop has to be 6 inches tall on the ground. Please remember, that you cannot harvest your crop, and it should be on the ground for the season. Try to use as little seed as necessary for a cover crop to grow as a cover on the ground.
Cover cropping projects will be audited this fall to confirm compliance before funds are issued. Projects that fail to meet the 6” of cover will not receive funding. Please consider the timing, seed rate, and species selection of your cover crop to ensure cover is achieved. Please use this as an example of cover crop species strategies:
| Category | Species | Seeding Rate | Target Window |
| Annual Cereals | Oats/barley/wheat | 100-120lbs/a | Aug. 15- Sep. 30 |
| Brassicas | Forage kale, oilseed radish, and/or tillage radish | 10-15lbs/a | Aug. 7- Sep. 1 |
| Spring or winter peas | Austrain winter/spring yellow or green field pea | 100-150lbs/a | Aug. 7- Sep. 1 |
| Spring cereal/brassica mix | 80-100lbs/a cereal and 5-10 lbs/a brassica | Aug. 7- Sep. 7 | |
| Spring cereal/brassica/pea | 50-80 lbs/a cereal, 5 lbs/a brassica, 50-80 lbs/a pea | Aug. 7- Sep. 7 | |
| Winter cereals | Fall rye/winter wheat | 140-160 lbs/a | Sep.1 -Oct. 1 |
